Onsted, the southwest gateway to the Irish Hills, was organized in 1883 by William Onsted, named after his father, John, who was the first person to purchase land there. Onsted became a town as a result of the Michigan and Ohio Railroad coming through and was eventually incorporated as a village in 1907.
